The sculptor
Jan Bakermans

The abstract or figurative sculpture of Jan Bakermans (65, Academy for Visual Arts in Arendonk, Belgium) owe their existence to his sharp observation of reality. Strength and dynamics are the characteristics that catches the eye. But more than a precise anatomy, the spiritual expression is the purpose of his portraits, torsos and human figures. By studies in clay after model with much attention for the natural attitude and expression he will achieve an honest interpretation in plaster or stone.

His abstract statues have also been derived from the observed reality. In rudimentary forms, e.g. a broken branche, he recognizes universal values, that are represented symbolically. An old skate inspires him to threedimensional graphic lines in which the form of the original skate and the lines of the scratches on the ice are to be recognized. Bakermans is specifically inspired by organic forms and human figures, but also by the works of great artists. Once, by seeing Goya’s Nude Maja he brought the sensual attraction back to a linear Construction in which Goya’s language of seduction became tangible.
Another source of inspiration is his technical and theoretic background from his old profession as a teacher mechanical engineering. When he found a piece of marble that came from an ornament of an old abby, he sculpted a statue in which the history of the stone revived.
